Broken water main causes sinkhole to open on Tarzana street

A broken water main caused a sinkhole to open up on a street in Tarzana on Tuesday evening, shortly before it swallowed a minivan.
The incident was first reported at around 5:15 p.m. in the 5900 block of Tampa Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews were sent to the area after receiving reports of flooding.
They arrived to find the water main break, which began to soak the ground to the point that a large sinkhole opened up in the middle of the road.
At around 7:30 p.m., the Los Angeles Department of Transportation contacted officers to report that the sinkhole had engulfed a minivan, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
No injuries have been reported, but with SkyCal over the scene, nearly a quarter of the car could be seen nose-down in the hole, surrounded by water.
The cause of the water main break remains under investigation, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said. As their work continues, nearly 40 customers remain without water.
There is no estimated time as to when the line will be fixed.
